From what I have heard, Coach
Dabo Swinney is establishing new traditions at Clemson after Coach Tommy
Bowden's (deeply loves Jesus-see Monday's post) departure. One statement from Coach
Swinney indicates inside out leadership (heart driven leadership):
"This group is unified, and we will be until the very end of the season, I don't care what the scoreboard shows. I don't care. Because I'm not going to allow it to be any other way." I hope that the wins will come, but it's not my No. 1 concern," he said.Sports and the world condition us to believe that it is all about winning. Quite the contrary from a spiritual sense where it should be all about PEOPLE and not winning or in business results.
As a leader at a fortune 100 company I was guilty of worshiping results for the first half of my career. Although I cared about my people, my promotion (me) was more of a priority in my heart. God convicted me that although I cared about my people it did not reflect Jesus love. I was managing in collections area of MBNA at the time that I shifted my priorities to people over promotion. I wanted to glorify God and trust him with my career. The more desperate I became for God's Word the more my people wanted to climb the mountain with me. We were in it together and it was refreshing.
I became a student of leadership development and spent at least a hour each day working on my own heart. I often wondered why I was not being promoted, thinking I was as qualified as others (pride). There was so much darkness in my own heart that was holding me back. I had a plank in my own eye versus the speck in my peers and superiors eyes. As much good as I offered the community and my people my heart was not pure before the Lord.
I allowed God's truth and other leadership readings (be selective) to change me from the inside out. I surrendered my professional career to Jesus and began to lead for him. "People do not care until they know how much you care" became my heartbeat. I sought to learn dog's names, children's names and children's names of the people whose efforts I managed. I developed my own mantra that I would apply to everyday'"Let them see Jesus". Something simple but powerful standard to love and live by.
Through God's grace, results followed my commitment to people not winning as well as the promotion I desired so much. God enhanced my leadership ability from the inside out. God gives Coaches and leaders an amazing platform to influence and impact the character development of others. If you want to change the climate of your organization start with your own heart. Psalm 139: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting."
Make it a great day!
