Joy in Suffering?

We often hear about the negative side of sport. Wilson Holloway's story is inspiring. "I don't take things for granted anymore. Just being able to practice. There's days I wish I could go out and do the drills everyone hates to do." says Holloway, a 6 foot 6 offensive lineman from Tulsa who is battling cancer (link below).

We often walk through life with ungrateful hearts. This story reminded me of my good friend Jimmy Raub who had a tumor in high school and had to come to school with his head shaved. About twelve years later Jimmy died tragically in his sleep. His death shook our community and beyond. The adversity of a 29 year old man passing gave us the opportunity to mourn what we lost, search for something greater than ourselves, appreciate what we have and be thankful for what Jimmy gained (heaven).

"James 1:2 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing."

God is always at work. I cannot say that I found the joy in Jimmy's death, my dad's death or my brother's tragic death but my faith was tested and I have committed to endure in faith. When we have faith in Jesus we have all we need to endure. Only He can satisfy.

Make it a great night!
