It is amazing how the music we listened to years ago is still in our mental database. The title of today's message hails from the lyrics of a rap song from Whodini from the 80's. This should serve as motivation for memorizing God's truth because "When we know the truth it will set us free."
Christians can be too busy to feast on God's word or practice spiritual disciplines. There are numerous methods of evangelism to study, one of the best is to memorize salvation verses enabling us to speak the truth in love. Inputting truth into our database builds the defense mechanism that we need to exist in an evil world, reach others for Jesus and to walk in freedom. Paul said "be transformed by the renewing of your minds."
We all need a "Winner's Circle" of friends. I do not like putting labels or hierarchy on friends since Jesus is my best friend, I like to refer to the other people who speak into my life as my brothers, "There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Jesus)." Jay Fetterman is a great blessing in my life since our days at MBNA in the great state of Maine.
Jay is an Ironman competitor (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run =140.6 miles in one day!). It is a special part of our brotherhood. Three summers ago Jay finished IM Lake Placid to raise funds for FCA.
The past two summers Jay and I have travelled to Lake Placid to serve on mission trips there (top picture 2008 IM Competitor Dinner) to serve the athletes. During this time period Jay has spoken truth ("whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for the glory of God") into my life about my physical challenges in glorifying God. I have embraced his iron sharpening iron words and as of today, 30 lbs lighter. For three years I asked athletes and Coaches to be their best, however I have been a hypocrite with my "temple". My stomach was a King when the Lord desires to have sole possession of the throne. Thank you Jay for the truth you were willing to speak.
We also had the blessing of baptizing Jay before the 2006 IM race. I have seen God transform Jay Fetterman into a warrior for Jesus Christ since that day culminating yesterday in a planning meeting for Northern DE FCA. We attended similar sessions over the past three years and Jay seemed to take a quiet approach in the meetings. Yesterday, Jay spoke courageous words that encouraged accountability of our team to fulfill the Great Commandment & Great Commission and building Kingdom Building leaders. He also committed to training (400 plus hours) and competiting in the 2009 Lake Placid Ironman to raise funds for FCA.
Jay has been intentional about his walk and surrender to Jesus. He has been a light in my life for a number of years. I am grateful that he is a brother that would lay down his life for the cause of Christ "John 15:13" and for our friendship. A leader cannot exist on their own, we need friends who will bless and convict us.
May God bless you with a "Winners Circle"!
Make it a great life!
